"There is nothing wrong with referring to Manchester United as Man U or ManU, certainly nothing relating to the Munich tragedy. This is just an urban legend that keeps circulating among overseas fans in particular, as well as UK-based fans.
United were founded in 1878 as Newton Heath and were renamed to the present name in 1902. During this time, local newspapers such as the Manchester Evening News, as well as national newspapers, used to shorten the name of the club from Manchester United to Man U to save precious space on the printed paper. That's it. This is the not-at-all sinister history of the term "Man U".
There are many offensive gestures and songs that mock the Munich tragedy of 1958. These are brought out mainly by supporters of Bolton Wanderers, Leeds United, Liverpool and Manchester City in descending order of regularity. Even as recently as the game against Leeds at Old Trafford and the 6-2 battering they received, Munich was trending on Twitter thanks to their scummy fans.
However, Man U is not at all relevant in context of Munich. The reason it is isn't used anymore because the alternative terms Man United or simply just United are used instead. I have spoken to many, many matchgoing fans who have attended games at Old Trafford for more than 50 years, and without exception, they have no idea where this story of Man U being offensive came from."
